Best Light Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2 November 2026
Who we are
Best Light is a Mac app that makes you look like yourself on a good day, on live video calls and in recorded videos. It is made by Sally Slater ("we" and "us" in this policy). This policy covers the Best Light app and the website bestlight.ai. Questions or requests: [email protected].
Best Light is for adults aged 18 and over.
The website
Hosting. bestlight.ai is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address and basic details of each request (such as your browser type and the page asked for) so it can deliver the site and protect it from attacks. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie to tell people from bots.
Visit counts. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits to the site. It loads a small script from Cloudflare that records which pages are viewed, the site that sent you there, your browser and type of device, and your country. It sets no cookies, doesn't use your IP address to identify you, and doesn't follow you to other sites. We see only totals, not individual visitors. The site has no advertising and no tracking pixels, loads no fonts or other scripts from other companies, and sets no cookies of its own.
The waitlist. If you join, we collect your email address. We use it only to email you about Best Light. The waitlist is run by Kit (kit.com), which stores your details and sends our emails. Kit records whether our emails are opened and which links are clicked. We keep your details until you unsubscribe, using the link in every email or by writing to us. If the form can't send in the background, it takes you to a thank-you page on Kit's own website, where Kit's privacy and cookie policy applies.
The app sends nothing off your Mac
Best Light does all of its video and face work on your Mac. It has no account and makes no internet connections. It doesn't upload your camera picture or your videos, and it never sends pictures of your face, or any measurements of it, to us or anyone else. Its parts talk to each other only inside your Mac.
Best Light hands its finished picture to OBS Virtual Camera, free software from the OBS Project that you install and that also runs only on your Mac. When you pick OBS Virtual Camera as your camera in Zoom, Teams, Meet or another app, that app receives the finished picture, as it would from any camera. Its own privacy policy covers what it does with it.
What the app keeps on your Mac
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| Your saved look (slider settings, colors, and blemishes you remove on every video) | ~/Library/Application Support/Best Light/my-look.json |
| Your face setup, if you choose to do it | my-face.json, in the same folder |
| Blemishes or stray hairs you click on one video | A small file next to that video (.spots.json, .hairs.json) |
| Blemishes you click in the live window | live.spots.json in the looks folder inside Best Light's own folder |
| While the live filter is on: the newest plain camera picture, about once a second, with your usual eyelid numbers | live-frame.jpg and live-frame.json in the same looks folder, deleted when the live filter stops |
| A technical log, including the names and locations of videos you opened | ~/Library/Logs/Best Light.log |
| The last video you opened, and whether you skipped face setup | ~/Library/Preferences/ai.bestlight.BestLight.plist |
| How you like the slider page laid out | ~/Library/WebKit/ai.bestlight.BestLight |
None of these are sent to us. If the app quits unexpectedly, the last live picture can stay until you next turn the live filter on and off. A Time Machine backup made while the live filter is on can include that picture.
To delete them: quit Best Light, then delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Best Light folder, the live.spots.json, live-frame.jpg and live-frame.json files in Best Light's looks folder, ~/Library/Logs/Best Light.log, ~/Library/Preferences/ai.bestlight.BestLight.plist, the ~/Library/WebKit/ai.bestlight.BestLight folder, and any .spots.json or .hairs.json files next to your videos. Moving the app to the Trash doesn't remove them. Because these files never reach us, we can't see or delete them for you.
Face data and biometric privacy laws
Some US states, including Illinois, Texas and Washington, have laws about biometric information such as face geometry. Here is exactly how Best Light handles your face.
- Face points. To put makeup in the right place as you move, Best Light uses Google's MediaPipe face and skin models, which run on your Mac. For each video frame they find about 478 points on your face (such as the corners of your eyes and the edges of your lips) and which parts of the picture are skin and hair. Those points stay in your Mac's memory only while the filter runs, a frame or two at a time, and are never written to disk. They are used only to apply your look.
- No recognition. Best Light never uses your face to recognise you or anyone else, and never compares it with other faces.
- Saved numbers on your Mac. Clicked blemishes and hairs are saved as numbers, not pictures: which three face points a spot sits between, and how big it is, so a removed spot follows your face. The optional face setup is a 15-second look at the camera that saves two numbers (how open each upper eyelid usually is, as a share of your eye's size) and the date. While the live filter is on, the app also keeps these eyelid numbers with the live picture. None of these numbers can be used to recognise you.
- We never receive it. We never receive, store, sell, lease, trade or profit from pictures of your face or any data about your face. Nothing about your face leaves your Mac.
Retention and destruction. Face points are thrown away within a frame or two and are never saved. The live picture and its eyelid numbers are deleted when the live filter stops. Other files saved on your Mac stay until you delete them, which you can do at any time using the steps above. Because we never receive any face data, we hold none to keep or destroy. If this ever changes, we will tell you first, ask for your written consent where the law requires it, and destroy the data when its purpose is met or within 3 years of your last use of Best Light, whichever comes first.
Sharing and selling
We share information only with Cloudflare and Kit, and only what each needs to do the jobs above. We may also share it when the law requires it, or with a new owner if Best Light is sold, who would have to keep the promises in this policy. We don't sell your information, use it for advertising, or build profiles about you. Because we don't track you across sites, we treat every visitor as if Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control were on.
Your rights
You can ask us to tell you what we hold about you, give you a copy, correct it, delete it, or stop emailing you. Email [email protected] from the address you signed up with. We'll answer within 30 days, and we won't treat you differently for asking. If you live in the EU or UK, we rely on your consent for waitlist emails and on our legitimate interest in running a safe website; you can also object, limit how we use your information, or complain to your data protection authority. Kit and Cloudflare may process your information in the United States or elsewhere.
We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think someone under 18 has joined the waitlist, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, for example if any data about your face would ever leave your Mac, we'll tell you before it takes effect and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
